Amazon informa cuántos de sus empleados se han tenido Covid-19
CIUDAD DE MÉXICO, octubre 4 (EL UNIVERSAL).- Una de las empresas que más se ha beneficiado de la situación por la contingencia sanitaria mundial es Amazon que, no solo mantuvo sus operaciones sino que tuvo que contratar a más personas para poder responder a la alta demanda de sus servicios. En ese sentido la compañía también fue cuestionada sobre las medidas para mantener la seguridad de sus empleados y, al respecto, acaba de dar a conocer información.
Como reporta el medio Engadget, un día después de que un informe de NBC News investigara la falta de transparencia de Amazon en torno a los brotes de Covid-19 en sus instalaciones, la compañía ha publicado datos sobre cuántos empleados se sometieron a pruebas y, de ellos, cuántos dieron positivo.
Aunque es difícil evaluar exactamente cómo Amazon manejó la pandemia en comparación con otras, pues este tipo de informes no se han dado a conocer por otras grandes compañías en los Estados Unidos, ahora se sabe que el gigante del comercio electrónico está realizando miles de pruebas por día. De hecho, aseguró que planea llegar a aplicar 50 mil pruebas diarias en 650 de sus almacenes para el mes de noviembre.
De acuerdo con la información dada a conocer por Amazon de los un millón 372 mil empleados que trabajaron directamente o para su cadena Whole Foods, entre el 1 de marzo y el 19 de septiembre, unos 19 mil 816 dieron positivo o se presumió que tuvieron Covid-19.
Según Amazon, el número es mucho menor de lo que podría esperarse. Aseguró que, utilizando datos de la Universidad Johns Hopkins para el mismo período de tiempo, teniendo en cuenta factores como la geografía y la edad, además de la tasa de infección para la población general, se podría estimar que debieron presentarse 33 mil 952 contagios. Incluso, presentó un desglose estado por estado en donde demuestra porcentajes de casos entre los empleados rastreados, más bajos en comparación con la población general.
De la información presentada, uno de los estados que se analizó con más cuidado fue el de Minnesota en donde los empleados habían realizado protestas debido a las condiciones de trabajo que les ofrecía Amazon y, de hecho se puede comprobar una tasa de contagio de 31.7 casos por cada mil entre los empleados, un porcentaje que está muy por encima de la tasa reportada del estado que es de solo 15.8, y que también supera el nivel estimado de la propia compañía que es de 19.1.
Otra de las críticas que está recibiendo la empresa con relación a este informe es que no está considerando toda su cadena de logística sino únicamente a los empleados directos.
Denuncias
Para entender mejor la razón del reporte sobre contagios de Covid-19 publicado por Amazon hay que señalar que el 15 de julio el personal de un almacén en Shakopee, Minnesota, llevó a cabo seis horas de huelga, precisamente el día del inicio del Prime Day en Estados Unidos, para exigir cuotas menos estrictas y la conversión de más trabajadores temporales a empleados permanentes.
Los trabajadores denunciaron que el hecho de trabajar bajo un esquema de cuotas los ponía en mayores riesgos, lo que podría mejorarse con la contratación de más personal permanente.
También se dijo que Amazon estaba exigiendo demasiado a su personal y los estaba controlando. Ello, a pesar de que la compañía había aumentado unas semanas atrás el salario mínimo a 15 dólares por hora.
La compañía ha estado en la mira de las autoridades recientemente por situaciones como la anterior. Además, los trabajadores también presentaron quejas ante la Junta Nacional de Relaciones Laborales alegando que el proveedor de personal del gigante tecnológico, Integrity Staffing Solutions, tomó represalias contra los huelguistas despidiendo a un organizador y deduciendo el tiempo de huelga de su asignación de licencia trimestral.
La respuesta de Amazon ha sido que ya ofrece lo que los trabajadores están pidiendo. «El hecho es que Amazon ya ofrece lo que esta organización externa está pidiendo.
