CIUDAD DE MÉXICO, septiembre 24 (EL UNIVERSAL).- Un hombre de 70 años que padeció Covid-19 fue sometido a un trasplante doble de pulmón, lo cual abriría una nueva posibilidad en el porvenir de personas que han padecido los estragos del coronavirus en su cuerpo.
El Centro de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Texas informó sobre el trabajo que hicieron sus especialistas en cuidados intensivos, enfermedades infecciones, anestesiólogos y enfermeras para lograr este desafío que ha sido considerado como un «hito».
Uno de los puntos en el que debieron tener certeza fue que tanto Francisco Medellín, el hombre que se sometió a la operación, y el donante no tuvieran ya rastro de Covid-19 en su cuerpo.
Medellín adquirió el SARS-CoV-2 en junio pasado y fue remitido al Memorial Hermann-TMC para ser tratado por el equipo de la Universidad de Texax.
Previo a ello médicos ya habían probado diversas terapias disponibles, como plasma convaleciente con anticuerpos, esteroides y el remdesivir, pero los malestares del hombre de 70 años, la renumonia y el síndrome de dificultad respiratoria aguda no cedían.
Rumbo a la operación
El daño de los pulmones del paciente era extenso y había una gran inflamación, más de la que es apreciable en un paciente que está siendo sometido a un trasplante, aseguró en un comunicado Manish K. Patel, quien realizó la cirugía.
«Eran pantanosos, pesados y tenían lesiones extensas», aseguró respecto al estado de los órganos de Medellín por las afecciones que sufrió debido al virus.
Una de las dificultades es que por el lado de los donantes no hay pautas para el Covid-19, por lo que Luis Z. Ostrosky, de la Faultad de Medicina de McGovern, manifestó que debieron idear sus propias pautas.
«Nuestra regla: prueba de PCR rápida en los pulmones del donante, además de otra prueba PCR estándar con un tiempo de respuesta más largo», dijo.
El trasplante de pulmón de pacientes con Covid-19 es poco común luego que el coronavirus es «algo tan nuevo que no entendemos completamente», dijo Igor D. Gregoric, codirector del programa ACTAT.
«Con el Covid-19, hemos tenido un gran número de personas que están muy enfermas, las más enfermas de ellas las hemos podido tratar en la unidad de cuidados intensivos y les hemos colocado el ECMO (oxigenación por membrana extracorpórea) como último recurso», añadió.
Tras concluir la cirugía, «en el momento en que salió, sus pulmones se veían fantásticos», dijo el médico cirujano Bindu Akkanti.
