El serbio golpeó con una pelota a la juez de línea Laura Clark y fue descalificado del torneo.

«Las reglas son claras, no fue mi intención pero fue claro… Lo acepto y hay que seguir adelante«, dijo. 

Quiso regresar la pelota a una de los ayudante y golpeó a la juez, «cuando haces eso existen posibilidades de golpear a alguien. Es la primera vez que me ocurre algo así en mi carrera. No quería hacerle daño. Fue desafortunado, fue raro«.

Djokovic empacó rápidamente y abandonó las instalaciones. Fue al aeropuerto y salió de Nueva York en poco tiempo. En las redes sociales, el serbio se disculpó con los organizadores del torneo y con todos los que se sintieron ofendidos por su comportamiento. «Lo siento mucho ...», escribió.

Para finalizar su rueda de prensa, dijo: «Acepté lo sucedido, aunque admito que no fue fácil. La descalificación fue un shock para mí. Fue difícil, especialmente porque me sentía genial en Nueva York y tenía un objetivo diferente en mente. Sin embargo, todo sucedió tan rápido y fue tan inesperado que no supe cómo reaccionar«.
